The Lutkin Benediction and Sevenfold Amen has been used by countless a cappella choruses for the conclusions of their concerts over the years. Among those choruses was the Millsaps Singers, back in the days when Samuel Jones was a student chorister. When he was asked by his Alma Mater to compose a work to conclude a reunion concert of the Singers, he turned naturally to the Lutkin melody as a cantus firmus for a chorale prelude, both memorializing and commenting upon the earlier musical experience.
