Janus
Suite for Chamber Orchestra
Instrumentation: *2,*2,*2,2/2,2,1,0/T,1P,Hp/Stgs
Duration: 18 mins.
Written for the opening week of the Seattle Symphony‘s new Benaroya Hall (premiered on September 16, 1998), this work expresses in its two movements both a nostalgic backward glance and a zestful, exhilarating expression of optimism. Dedicated to Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony, this was the first work Samuel Jones produced after being named Composer in Residence of the Seattle Symphony.
- “…This new movement, with acrobatic themes constructed out of whizzing scales, was the most convincing work of the evening overall.”
---Gavin Borchart, Seattle Weekly
- “…a big solid symphonic score…brightly optimistic.”
---Melinda Bargreen, Seattle Times
- “…remarkably neo-romantic in flavor and full of sweet nostalgia. Hard not to like.”
---R.M. Campbell, Seattle Post-Intelligencer
