Commissioned by the Houston Symphony, this work is fast becoming one of the standard American overtures. Sweeping strings and brilliant brasses combine to make an exceptionally effective concert opener, especially for the program that needs a big but short first work.
- “This wonderfully constructed piece makes fine use of the brass section and almost bounces with energy.”
---Kay Mohr Paine, Amarillo Daily News
- “The concert began with Samuel Jones’ festive, flourish-filled Fanfare and Celebration.”
---Carl Cunningham, Houston Post
- “Majestic idiomatic writing for the brass instruments is interwoven with dazzling effects created by oft-repeated, rapidly ascending “sweeping” gestures. Throughout, the brass sections were given ample opportunity to shine.”
---André Fox, Rice Thresher
